- Sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Flour
- Butter
- 3/4 cup milk
How to Make Beaten Biscuits
- Combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon baking powder in a large bowl.
- Cut in 1/2 cup cold shortening (vegetable shortening or lard) using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add 3/4 cup milk, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Using a food processor (or a rolling pin and some serious elbow grease!), beat the dough for 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and slightly elastic. (If using a food processor, pulse until well combined).
- Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut into desired shapes (squares, rounds, etc.) using a knife or biscuit cutter.
- Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F (232°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
