Ingredients for Beef Merlot Crock Pot
- 2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons bacon fat
- 1 large onion, chopped
- Garlic Cloves
- 1 cup water
- Beef Bouillon Cubes
- 1/4 cup Merlot (optional)
How to Make Beef Merlot Crock Pot
- Heat a large frying pan over high heat.
- Add 2 tablespoons of bacon fat and melt completely.
- Add 1 large chopped onion and 4 cloves minced garlic to the pan.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and sauté for 5 minutes, until softened.
- Remove onion and garlic mixture from the pan and set aside.
- Increase heat to high. Add 1 tablespoon of bacon fat or olive oil to the pan if needed.
- Add 2 lbs beef stew meat (cut into 1-inch cubes) to the hot pan and brown quickly on all sides. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Transfer the browned beef to your crock pot.
- Add 1 cup of water to the frying pan to deglaze, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
- Stir in 2 beef bouillon cubes until dissolved.
- Add 1/4 cup Merlot (optional).
- Pour the liquid from the frying pan over the beef in the crock pot.
- Spoon the onion and garlic mixture over the beef.
- Cover and cook on low for 10 hours, or until the beef is fork-tender.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, roasted or buttered broccoli, and crusty bread.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
