Ingredients for Beer Braised Onions
- Unsalted Butter
- Onion
- Beer
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
How to Make Beer Braised Onions
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add 2 pounds of thinly sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened (about 8-10 minutes).
- Pour in 6 fluid ounces of your favorite beer (dark beers work particularly well). Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 16-18 minutes, or until the beer is mostly absorbed and the onions are starting to brown and caramelize.
- Add another 2 fluid ounces of beer and simmer gently for 5 minutes, allowing the onions to fully absorb the liquid and develop a deep, rich flavor.
- Serve warm as a delicious topping for burgers, sandwiches, or enjoy as a side dish!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
