How to Make Bratwurst Casserole Meal In One

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel and chop 1 lb carrots and 1 lb potatoes into 1-inch pieces. Boil in salted water until almost tender (about 10-12 minutes). Drain well.
  3. While vegetables boil, prick 1 lb Johnsonville brats with a fork. In a large oven-safe skillet, add brats and 1 cup beer. Cover and simmer over medium heat, turning once, until beer evaporates (about 10 minutes).
  4. Remove brats from skillet and set aside. Finish browning the brats in the skillet if needed.
  5. Add 1 tbsp vegetable oil to the skillet. Saute 1 medium onion, chopped, until golden brown (about 5 minutes).
  6. Stir in 1 (26 ounce) jar sauerkraut, 1/2 tsp chili flakes, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper.
  7. Mix well, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. The kraut mixture should be golden brown.
  8. Add the cooked carrots and potatoes to the skillet with the brats.
  9. Pour the sauerkraut mixture over the vegetables and brats. Cover the skillet tightly with foil.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
  11. Serve hot with sweet Bavarian mustard.
