Cheddar Loaves Recipe

Indulge in the irresistible aroma and taste of these Cheddar Loaves! This recipe, originally from a 2007 issue of *toh* magazine and shared by Agnes Ward, creates two deliciously fluffy loaves bursting with cheddar cheese. Perfect for sandwiches, chili dipping, or simply toasted to golden perfection, this light and flavorful bread is a crowd-pleaser. While the recipe makes two loaves, it's easily halved for a single loaf – perfect for smaller households. Note that the loaves tend to be wider than tall, but the incredible taste makes it worth it!

How to Make Cheddar Loaves

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast in 1 cup warm water (105-115°F).
  2. Add ½ cup milk, ¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted, 2 large eggs, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1 ½ teaspoons salt. Stir in 6 cups all-purpose flour.
  3. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer for 3 minutes.
  4. Gradually add enough of the remaining flour (about 1-2 cups) to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  6. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Add additional flour as needed, if too sticky.
  7. Place the dough in a large greased bowl, turning once to coat.
  8. Cover the bowl and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  9. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
  10. Knead 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese into the dough until evenly distributed.
  11. Divide the dough in half.
  12. Shape each portion into a 6-inch round loaf.
  13. Place the loaves on two greased baking sheets.
  14. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  15. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
  16. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
  17. Store leftover bread in the refrigerator.
