How to Make Gingerbread Ornaments

  1. Cream together 1/2 cup (113g) softened butter, 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar, and 1/4 cup (60ml) molasses until light and fluffy.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in 1 large egg yolk.
  4. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or up to 3 days).
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the chilled dough to 1/8 inch thickness.
  6. Use Christmas cookie cutters or a knife to cut out your desired shapes.
  7. Carefully transfer the ornaments to ungreased baking sheets.
  8. In a small bowl, lightly beat 1 large egg white with a teaspoon of water. Brush the ornaments lightly with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set and lightly golden.
  10. Remove from oven and immediately use a small straw or toothpick to poke a hole about 1 inch from the top of each ornament before they cool completely.
  11. Let the ornaments cool completely on a wire rack.
  12. Once completely cool, decorate your gingerbread ornaments with icing and sprinkles. Thread with gold cord or ribbon for hanging.
  13. Enjoy your homemade gingerbread ornaments!
