How to Make Patriotic Gelatin Salad

  1. In four separate bowls, dissolve 1 package (3 oz) of blue gelatin, 1 package (3 oz) of red gelatin, and 2 packages (3 oz each) of unflavored gelatin into 1 cup (8 oz) of boiling water each.
  2. Add 1/2 cup (4 oz) of cold water to each bowl and stir until completely dissolved.
  3. Lightly oil a 10-inch fluted tube pan. Pour the blue gelatin into the prepared pan.
  4. Refrigerate until almost set (approximately 30 minutes).
  5. Set the remaining bowls of red and unflavored gelatin aside at room temperature.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 2 packages of unflavored gelatin with 1/2 cup (4 oz) cold water. Let stand for 5 minutes to bloom.
  7. Heat 2 cups (16 oz) of milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
  8. Stir in the softened unflavored gelatin and 1 cup (200g) of sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  9. Remove from heat.
  10. Stir in 1 cup (8 oz) sour cream and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
  11. Once the blue gelatin layer is almost set, carefully spoon 1 1/2 cups of the sour cream mixture evenly over the blue layer.
  12. Refrigerate until almost set (approximately 30 minutes).
  13. Carefully spoon the red gelatin evenly over the cream layer.
  14. Refrigerate until almost set (approximately 30 minutes).
  15. Repeat layers: blue gelatin, cream mixture, red gelatin, chilling for at least 30 minutes between each layer.
  16. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the salad to fully set.
