Ingredients for 8 Layer Jello Salad

  • Jello Gelatin
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Unflavored Gelatin
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Vanilla

How to Make 8 Layer Jello Salad

  1. Dissolve 1 (3 ounce) package of Jell-O (any flavor, or mix and match for a colorful effect) in 1 3/4 cups of boiling water.
  2. Pour into a 9x13 inch baking pan and refrigerate until completely set.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups milk and 1 cup granulated sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  4. Remove from heat immediately once boiling begins.
  5. In a separate bowl, dissolve 2 envelopes (7 grams each) unflavored gelatin in 1/2 cup cold water. Let it bloom for about 5 minutes.
  6. Slowly whisk the bloomed gelatin into the hot milk mixture until completely dissolved.
  7. Let the mixture cool slightly (until lukewarm). Stir in 1 cup sour cream and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Mix well.
  8. Pour 1 cup of the milk mixture over the set Jell-O layer in the pan. Refrigerate for approximately 1 hour, or until set.
  9. Carefully pour the next Jell-O layer (prepared as in step 1 with a different flavor if desired) over the set milk layer. Refrigerate for approximately 1 hour, or until set.
  10. Continue layering Jell-O and milk mixture, alternating until all 8 layers are complete. Refrigerate overnight for best results.
  11. For a festive touch, use a star-shaped cookie cutter to serve individual portions.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
