Ingredients for Adas Bil Hamod Lentils With Lemon Juice

  • Black Lentils
  • 3 cups water (for lentils) + 2 tablespoons water (for flour slurry)
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • Garlic Cloves
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped
  • Juice of 1 large lemon
  • Salt
  • Pepper

How to Make Adas Bil Hamod Lentils With Lemon Juice

  1. Rinse 1 cup of brown or green lentils under cold water.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the lentils with 3 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Peel and cube 2 medium potatoes. Add them to the lentils and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes, or until the lentils and potatoes are tender, stirring occasionally.
  4. While the lentils simmer, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add 2 cloves of minced garlic and 1/4 cup of chopped fresh coriander (cilantro). Sauté until fragrant and slightly softened, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Stir the garlic-coriander mixture into the lentils and potatoes.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour with 2 tablespoons of water until smooth. Add this mixture to the lentils and stir well.
  7. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes more, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in the juice of 1 large lemon.
  9. Serve hot or cold with pita bread. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
