Ingredients for African Donuts
- Self Rising Flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- Active Dry Yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Water
- Vegetable Oil
How to Make African Donuts
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add the yeast mixture, milk, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out donut shapes. You can also shape them by hand into small balls.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully fry the donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack to drain excess oil.
- Serve warm with honey, fruit preserves, red beans, or diced beef, according to your preference.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
