Ingredients for Afro Dog

  • Ground Beef
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Red Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

How to Make Afro Dog

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 lb ground beef, 1/2 cup finely chopped onion, 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper, 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste), 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  2. Gently mix all ingredients until well combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Divide the beef mixture into 6 equal portions.
  4. Shape each portion into a hot dog shape. For a smoother shape, gently roll the meat into elongated cylinders.
  5. Wrap each Afro Dog individually in plastic wrap and freeze for at least 30 minutes (or until firm). This step helps maintain the shape during cooking.
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Carefully add the frozen Afro Dogs and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until firm to the touch.
  7. Remove the Afro Dogs from the boiling water and pat them dry with paper towels.
  8. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the Afro Dogs on all sides for 2-3 minutes per side, until nicely browned and slightly crispy.
  9. Serve immediately on toasted buns with your favorite hot dog toppings. We recommend a spicy slaw or a creamy cilantro-lime sauce!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
