Ingredients for Almost Apple Pie
- Margarine
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (for topping) + ¼ cup granulated sugar (for apples)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Sliced Apples
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping) + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for apples)
How to Make Almost Apple Pie
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, ½ cup rolled oats, ½ cup packed brown sugar, ¼ cup granulated sugar, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces. Use a pastry blender or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press half of the crumb mixture into the bottom of an 8x8 inch baking pan.
- Peel, core, and slice about 6 medium apples (about 6 cups sliced apples). In a large bowl, toss the apples with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crumb base in the baking pan.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the apples. Gently pat down.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
