How to Make Apples Cheese Spoon Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until softened.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 box (8.5 oz) corn muffin mix, 1 large egg, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup applesauce, 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 tablespoon dried sage, and a few grinds of black pepper.
  4. Stir in the cooked onion mixture.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 2-quart square baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes.
  7. While the spoon bread bakes, peel and thinly slice 1 medium apple. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and brush it over the apple slices.
  8. Arrange the apple slices in a pleasing pattern on top of the spoon bread.
  9. Continue baking for 25-30 minutes, or until the spoon bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes before serving.
  11. Garnish with fresh sage leaves (optional) before serving.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
