How to Make Apples Cheese Spoon Bread
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until softened.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 1 box (8.5 oz) corn muffin mix, 1 large egg, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup applesauce, 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 tablespoon dried sage, and a few grinds of black pepper.
- Stir in the cooked onion mixture.
- Pour the batter into a greased 2-quart square baking dish.
- Bake for 25 minutes.
- While the spoon bread bakes, peel and thinly slice 1 medium apple. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and brush it over the apple slices.
- Arrange the apple slices in a pleasing pattern on top of the spoon bread.
- Continue baking for 25-30 minutes, or until the spoon bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh sage leaves (optional) before serving.
