How to Make Au Gratin Garlic Potatoes
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan, heat 1 cup of milk over medium heat until bubbles form around the edges.
- Remove from heat and stir in 10.75 ounces (1 can) condensed cream of mushroom soup, 4 ounces cream cheese (softened), 2 cloves minced garlic, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Stir until completely smooth and creamy.
- Peel and thinly slice 2 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes. Thinly slice 1/2 medium yellow onion.
- Lightly butter a 3-quart baking dish.
- Layer half of the potatoes and onions in the prepared baking dish.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potato and onion layer.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese sauce.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is lightly browned.
- Sprinkle with paprika (optional) before serving.
