  • 1/2 cup (120ml) evaporated milk
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Quick Cooking Oats
  • 1 cup (200g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 227g) unsalted butter
  • Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 cup (60g) chopped walnuts

How to Make Baker S Chocolate Caramel Bars

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 14 ounces (397g) caramels and 1/2 cup (120ml) evaporated milk over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth. Alternatively, microwave on medium power for 5 minutes, stirring every minute until smooth.
  3. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups (190g) all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups (150g) rolled oats, 1 cup (200g) packed light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  4. Cut in 1 cup (2 sticks, 227g) unsalted butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Press half of the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 8x8 inch baking pan.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes.
  7. Evenly sprinkle 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup (60g) chopped walnuts over the baked crust.
  8. Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the chocolate and nuts.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the caramel layer.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes longer, or until the topping is golden brown and the caramel is bubbly.
  11. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
