How to Make Beautiful Burger Buns
- In a large bowl, combine 1 cup warm water (105-115°F), 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add 1 large egg and 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted. Whisk to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing with a wooden spoon or a stand mixer with a dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if needed to prevent sticking.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Shape each piece into a smooth ball. Place the buns onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each.
- Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the tops of the buns with milk or an egg wash for a golden brown finish.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let the buns cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
