How to Make Goetta
- In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Add 2 cups of steel-cut oats, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Add 1 pound ground beef, 1 pound ground pork, 1 large onion (finely chopped), 1 tablespoon of ground paprika, 1 teaspoon of ground mustard, 1/2 teaspoon of ground sage, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves. Cover and cook for 1 more hour, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan or similar sized containers. Let cool completely before refrigerating for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Once chilled, turn the Goetta out onto a cutting board. Slice into 1/2-inch thick pieces. Fry in a lightly oiled skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Serve hot and enjoy!
