How to Make Red Hot Applesauce
- Peel, core, and chop 4 large apples (about 2 pounds).
- In a large saucepan, combine the chopped apples, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves.
- Add 1/2 cup apple cider or apple juice.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 60-75 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- For a smoother applesauce, use an immersion blender or carefully transfer the applesauce to a regular blender and puree until smooth. (Be cautious when blending hot liquids!)
- Serve warm over your favorite breakfast treat or enjoy it on its own!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
