How to Make Tuna Strata

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 12x8 inch baking dish.
  2. Trim 6 slices of bread to fit the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Spread 1/2 teaspoon of butter on the top of each bread slice.
  4. Arrange the buttered bread slices, butter-side up, in the baking dish.
  5. In a medium bowl, gently flake 2 (5 ounce) cans of tuna. Add 1/2 cup chopped celery, 1/4 cup chopped onion, 1/4 cup chopped dill pickles, 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Mix well.
  6. Spread the tuna mixture evenly over the bread layer. Sprinkle with 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Trim 6 more slices of bread and butter the tops of each slice.
  8. Arrange the remaining buttered bread slices, butter-side up, over the tuna and cheese mixture.
  9. In a medium bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup milk, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, and a dash of hot pepper sauce (to taste).
  10. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
  11. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the strata is puffy, lightly browned, and set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  12. Let the strata stand for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
