How to Make American Chop Suey

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cook 1 pound of elbow macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown 1 pound of ground beef with 1 medium onion, chopped. Cook for 10 minutes, breaking up the beef as it cooks.
  3. Drain off any excess grease and set the beef and onion mixture aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 green bell pepper (chopped), 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms, 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, and 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil until softened (about 5 minutes).
  5. Transfer the beef mixture from step 3 to a large pot or Dutch oven.
  6. Add 2 (10.75 ounce) cans of condensed tomato soup to the pot.
  7. Stir in the sautéed vegetables from step 4.

  9. Add 1 (14.5 ounce) can of diced tomatoes, undrained.
