How to Make Classic Meatloaf
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Make breadcrumbs: Place bread slices in a food processor and pulse 10 times, or until you have 1 ½ cups of coarse breadcrumbs.
- In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let stand for 5 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the milk.
- Add ground beef, egg, chopped onion, green bell pepper, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and 2 tablespoons of ketchup to the breadcrumb mixture.
- Gently mix all ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Lightly coat a 9x5-inch broiler pan with cooking spray.
- Shape the meat mixture into a 9x5-inch loaf and place it on the prepared broiler pan.
- Spread the remaining 6 tablespoons of ketchup evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the center registers 160°F (71°C).
- Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Cut the loaf into 12 slices and serve.
