Ingredients for Turtle Squares
- Flour
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2/3 cup (1 1/3 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup pecan halves
- Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
How to Make Turtle Squares
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 13x9 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, cream together 1 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup melted butter until light and fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
- Sprinkle 1 cup pecan halves evenly over the dough.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 2/3 cup butter and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, for 1 minute.
- Immediately pour the boiling mixture evenly over the pecans.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let cool completely in the pan.
- Melt chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. (Alternatively, melt chocolate in a double boiler.)
- Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the cooled bars.
- Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the chocolate to set.
- Once set, cut into 36 squares.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
