Ingredients for A Different Green Bean Casserole

  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
  • Onion
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Low Fat Milk
  • Dijon Mustard
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Cut Green Beans
  • Buttery Cracker

How to Make A Different Green Bean Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease or spray a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
  3. Melt 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Add 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped, and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Do not brown.
  5. Stir in 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour until fully dissolved, about 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Stir in 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  8. Continue stirring until the sauce is thick and the cheese is melted. If too thick, add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  9. Remove from heat and gently stir in 2 (15 ounce) cans of green beans, drained.
  10. Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
  11. Top with 1 1/2 cups crushed buttery crackers.
  12. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cracker crumbs are golden brown and bubbly.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
