Ingredients for Apple Cabbage Salad

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Dry Mustard
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
  • 1/4 cup water (for dressing) + 1 tablespoon cold water (for arrowroot)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
  • Plain Yogurt
  • 8 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 2 medium apples (cored and thinly sliced)

How to Make Apple Cabbage Salad

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon celery seed, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard. Gradually whisk in 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar until smooth.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of cold water and 1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder until smooth. Gradually whisk this mixture into the saucepan with the other ingredients until the dressing thickens slightly (about 1-2 minutes).
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the dressing cool completely. Then, refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Once chilled, stir in 1/4 cup plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons of your favorite mayonnaise (optional).
  5. In a large bowl, combine 8 cups of shredded green cabbage and 2 medium apples (cored and thinly sliced).
  6. Pour the chilled dressing over the cabbage and apples.
  7. Gently toss to coat evenly.
  8. Serve immediately or chill further for a colder salad. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
