- Self Raising Flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk
How to Make Apple Cake Top
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups peeled and sliced apples, ½ cup granulated sugar, ¼ cup water, and 6 whole cloves. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat and cook until apples are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- While apples cook, grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, cream together ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter and ¾ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in 1 large egg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour and 1 cup milk. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Pour the cooked apples into the prepared baking dish. Pour the batter evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with a dollop of whipped cream, ice cream, custard – or all three!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Elevate your dish with simple flavor boosters! A final flourish of freshly chopped herbs can add incredible brightness, while a squeeze of lemon or lime juice right before serving can awaken all the flavors. Don't underestimate a sprinkle of quality finishing salt or a drizzle of good olive oil to make your creation shine.
