How to Make Apple Cinnamon Streusel Bars
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 10x10 inch baking pan with butter or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs, ½ cup all-purpose flour, ½ cup packed brown sugar, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
- Add ½ cup melted unsalted butter and mix with a fork until evenly moistened.
- Reserve 1 ¼ cups of the streusel mixture. Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Peel and slice 4 medium apples (about 4 cups) into small pieces. Arrange evenly over the crust.
- Sprinkle the reserved 1 ¼ cups of streusel mixture evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the streusel is lightly golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let cool completely in the pan.
- While the bars cool, prepare the icing: In a small bowl, whisk together ½ cup powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons milk until smooth. Add more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
- Once the bars are completely cool, drizzle the icing over the top.
- Cut into bars and serve at room temperature. Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
