Ingredients for Apple Molasses Bread

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • All Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Ground Ginger
  • Ground Allspice
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • Dark Molasses
  • 1 cup raisins
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

How to Make Apple Molasses Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter and 1 ½ cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 2 large eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ½ teaspoon salt.
  5. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup applesauce and ½ cup molasses.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the applesauce mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Gently fold in 1 cup raisins and ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans.
  8. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  9. Bake for 60-75 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Start checking at 60 minutes.
  10. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
