How to Make Baked American Spaghetti
- In a large frying pan, cook 1 medium onion, chopped, and 2 cloves garlic, minced, until softened. Add 1 lb ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes, 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce, 1 cup water, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon dried basil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
- Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the meat sauce simmers, break 1 lb spaghetti into thirds and place in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Add 1/2 cup water to the spaghetti in the baking dish and gently toss to coat.
- Pour the meat sauce over the spaghetti and stir to combine all ingredients.
- Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
