How to Make Baked Swiss Steak
- Dredge the steak in 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, ensuring it's evenly coated.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the steak on both sides for about 2-3 minutes per side, until nicely seared.
- Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside. Drain any excess oil from the skillet.
- Place the browned steak in a deep 4-quart baking dish.
- Top the steak with 1 cup chopped celery, 1 cup chopped carrots, 1/2 cup chopped onion, and 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper.
- In a medium bowl, combine 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
- Stir the tomato mixture well and pour it evenly over the vegetables and steak in the baking dish.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the meat is incredibly tender. Check for doneness with a fork; it should easily pierce the steak.
- Remove from oven, let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.
