How to Make Baked Swiss Steak

  1. Dredge the steak in 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, ensuring it's evenly coated.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the steak on both sides for about 2-3 minutes per side, until nicely seared.
  3. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside. Drain any excess oil from the skillet.
  4. Place the browned steak in a deep 4-quart baking dish.
  5. Top the steak with 1 cup chopped celery, 1 cup chopped carrots, 1/2 cup chopped onion, and 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
  7. Stir the tomato mixture well and pour it evenly over the vegetables and steak in the baking dish.
  8. Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the meat is incredibly tender. Check for doneness with a fork; it should easily pierce the steak.
  9. Remove from oven, let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.
