How to Make Best Crunchy Breadsticks
- In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 12x18 inch rectangle.
- Cut the rectangle into 1-inch wide strips.
- Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with coarse sea salt and/or Parmesan cheese (optional).
- Let the breadsticks rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
