How to Make Cajun Hamburger Steak

  1. Sauté 1 medium chopped yellow onion and 1 chopped green bell pepper in a large skillet over medium heat until wilted (about 5-7 minutes).
  2. Add 2 thinly sliced green onions and sauté for another 2 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine 1.5 lbs ground beef with 2 tbsp Cajun seasoning, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp black pepper, and 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional). Gently mix in the sautéed vegetables.
  4. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  5. Broil the patties for 2-3 minutes per side, until nicely browned.
  6. Transfer the skillet to a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven. Add 1/2 cup of water to the skillet, cover with foil, and bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. It should reach at least 160°F (71°C), ideally 170°F (77°C).
  8. Add more water if needed and brush the steaks with a little water.
  9. Continue baking, checking the temperature frequently, until the desired internal temperature is reached.
  10. Reduce oven temperature to 250°F (121°C), add more water if needed and continue to cook for 5 more minutes.
  11. Remove from oven, brush with water or sauce, and let rest, covered, for 10 minutes.
  12. While the steaks rest, sauté 8 oz sliced cremini mushrooms in a separate skillet over medium heat until softened.
  13. Add seasonings to taste to the mushrooms. Stir in 2 tbsp of instant roux to create a sauce.
  14. Alternatively, you can use 1/2 cup of roasted red pepper sauce.
  15. Serve the Cajun Hamburger Steaks topped with the mushroom sauce (or roasted pepper sauce) and sautéed vegetables, or serve the sauce and vegetables on the side.
