How to Make Easy Mulled Wine

  1. Combine 1 orange (thinly sliced), 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves, 2 star anise, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg in a large stainless steel or enameled pot.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Reduce heat to the lowest setting. Carefully add 750ml (approximately 3 cups) of your favorite red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot). Gently reheat for 5-7 minutes, making sure NOT to boil the wine; this will burn off the alcohol and delicate flavors.
  4. Remove from heat. Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a serving pitcher to remove solids, if desired. (This step is optional)
  5. Serve warm in mugs, garnished with an orange slice and cinnamon stick, if desired. Serves 8.
