How to Make Easy Mulled Wine
- Combine 1 orange (thinly sliced), 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves, 2 star anise, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg in a large stainless steel or enameled pot.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Reduce heat to the lowest setting. Carefully add 750ml (approximately 3 cups) of your favorite red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot). Gently reheat for 5-7 minutes, making sure NOT to boil the wine; this will burn off the alcohol and delicate flavors.
- Remove from heat. Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a serving pitcher to remove solids, if desired. (This step is optional)
- Serve warm in mugs, garnished with an orange slice and cinnamon stick, if desired. Serves 8.
