How to Make Maple Marinated Tempeh

  1. Preheat oven to 230°C (450°F).
  2. Slice tempeh into your desired size pieces.
  3. Select an ovenproof dish that holds the tempeh slices in a single snug layer.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients: 1/4 cup maple syrup, 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free), 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (or more, to taste), 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, and a pinch of black pepper.
  5. Pour half of the marinade into the baking dish and arrange the tempeh slices on top in a single layer.
  6. Pour the remaining marinade evenly over the tempeh.
  7. Cover the baking dish tightly with foil.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes. Then, carefully use tongs to turn the tempeh slices.
  9. Continue baking, covered, for another 15 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for a further 10 minutes, or until the tempeh is browned and caramelized.
