How to Make Old Fashioned Family Pie
- In a large saucepan, brown 500g beef cubes over medium-high heat. Add 1 large chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Pour in one (400g) can of sliced mushrooms, including the juice. Stir well to combine.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of gravy powder, 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, and 4 tablespoons of cold water until smooth.
- Add the gravy mixture to the meat and mushrooms. Stir constantly until the sauce has thickened.
- Grease a 20cm pie dish. Roll out one sheet (375g) of ready-made puff pastry and use it to line the base and sides of the dish.
- Spoon the meat filling into the pastry-lined dish, pressing down firmly to level the top.
- Roll out a second sheet (375g) of puff pastry to cover the pie. Trim and crimp the edges, creating a decorative seal with a fork. Alternatively, you can cut a decorative design into the top crust.
- Pierce the top crust a few times with a fork to allow steam to escape. (Or cut a small 'V' shape in the top.)
- Lightly brush the top crust with milk or an egg wash, and decorate with leftover pastry scraps if desired.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- For fresh mushrooms (approx. 250g), add them after browning the beef. You may need to add a little extra water to adjust the consistency of the filling.
