Ingredients for Alaskan Blue Stew

  • Whale Meat
  • Unbleached Flour
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Onions
  • Potatoes
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Turnips
  • Garlic
  • 1 tablespoon MSG (optional)
  • Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 8 cups water

How to Make Alaskan Blue Stew

  1. Cut 5 lbs of whale meat into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Dust the whale meat with 1/2 cup all-purpose flour.
  3. Brown the whale meat in 3 tablespoons of hot olive oil in a very large Dutch oven or stockpot over medium-high heat. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  4. Add 2 large onions, chopped; 2 lbs carrots, chopped; 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed; and 1 cup celery, chopped. Sauté until vegetables are translucent, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Add 8 cups of water to cover the meat and vegetables.
  6. Add 1 tablespoon MSG (optional), 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper to taste.
  7. Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until the meat is very tender. This may take approximately 6-8 hours depending on your stove and the type of whale meat.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. Serve hot with crusty French bread and a fresh green salad.
  10. Serves approximately 12 (adjust ingredient quantities as needed for more servings).

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
