  • Butter
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Eggs
  • Salt
  • Cornstarch
  • Almond Extract
  • Milk
  • Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Water
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Hot Water
  • Cocoa

How to Make Amerikaner

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. While the cookies cool, prepare the glazes. For the chocolate glaze, melt chocolate chips with milk in a double boiler or microwave until smooth. For the vanilla glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
  10. Once the cookies are completely cool, dip half of each cookie into the chocolate glaze and the other half into the vanilla glaze. Allow the glaze to set before serving and enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
