Ingredients for Amish Salisbury Steak

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 cup crushed saltine crackers
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • 3 cups beef broth (or water)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

How to Make Amish Salisbury Steak

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Soak 1 cup of crushed saltine crackers in 1/2 cup of milk for 10 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine 1.5 lbs ground beef, 1/2 cup finely chopped onion, 1 egg, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
  4. Add the soaked cracker mixture to the beef mixture and gently combine. Do not overmix.
  5. Shape the mixture into 6 oblong patties (approximately 1/2 inch thick).
  6. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties slightly on both sides.
  7. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. Pour off excess grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons of drippings in the skillet.
  8. In a medium bowl, whisk together 3 cups of beef broth (or water), 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until smooth.
  9. Pour the gravy mixture into the skillet with the beef drippings. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  10. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
  11. Place the browned patties in a baking dish. Pour the gravy over the patties.
  12. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is bubbly.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
