How to Make Artichoke And Ham Strata
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray.
- Arrange 6 cups of cubed day-old bread (crusts removed), crust sides down, in the prepared baking dish.
- Drizzle 2 tablespoons of melted butter evenly over the bread.
- Arrange 1 cup of diced ham and 1 (14-ounce) can of artichoke hearts (drained and quartered) over the bread.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 6 large eggs, 1 ½ cups of milk, 1 cup of heavy cream, ½ teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg.
- Gradually add 1 ½ cups of shredded cheddar cheese and ½ cup of shredded Havarti cheese to the egg mixture; stir until combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the ham and artichoke layer.
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until the strata is set and golden brown. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
- Let the strata rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
