How to Make Bahraini Sweet Rice Muhammar
- In a small bowl, combine saffron threads, rose water, and ground cardamom. Let it steep for at least 10 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Add salt and the rinsed rice to the boiling water. Stir gently and bring back to a boil.
- Boil uncovered for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Drain the rice thoroughly in a fine-mesh sieve.
- In the same pot, melt the butter or ghee over medium heat.
- Add the drained rice, sugar (or honey), and the saffron-rosewater mixture to the melted butter/ghee. Stir gently to combine.
- Using the end of a wooden spoon, create 3 small holes in the rice to allow steam to escape.
- Cover the pot with a paper towel, then place the lid on tightly.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for approximately 20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked through and tender, and the liquid has been absorbed.
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving. Enjoy this delicious Bahraini Sweet Rice Muhammara!
