How to Make Barefoot Contessa's Barbecue Sauce

  1. In a large saucepan, sauté 1 medium yellow onion, chopped, and 2 cloves garlic, minced, in 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over low heat for 10-15 minutes, until onions are translucent but not browned.
  2. Stir in 6 tablespoons tomato paste, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup honey, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, and 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste).
  3. Reduce heat to low, simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  5. Ina recommends using this sauce with 2 1/2 to 3 pounds of chicken. Marinate chicken in 2/3 of the sauce for at least a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator before grilling.
  6. Grill chicken until cooked through. Serve with extra sauce on the side!
