How to Make Beef Barley Skillet
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound of beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes, and brown on all sides.
- Add 1 large onion, chopped; 2 carrots, chopped; and 2 celery stalks, chopped. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in 1 cup of barley, 4 cups of beef broth, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes, or until the barley is tender. If using pearl barley, simmer for 50-60 minutes.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving (optional).
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
