How to Make Beef Barley Skillet

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound of beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes, and brown on all sides.
  2. Add 1 large onion, chopped; 2 carrots, chopped; and 2 celery stalks, chopped. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in 1 cup of barley, 4 cups of beef broth, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes, or until the barley is tender. If using pearl barley, simmer for 50-60 minutes.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving (optional).

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
