- 1 teaspoon celery seed
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- Pepper
- Salt
- Dried Sage
- Dried Thyme
- 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
- Breadcrumbs
How to Make Stove Top Stuffing
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat.
- Add 1/2 cup of minced yellow onion and 1 teaspoon of celery seed to the pan. Sauté for 3-5 minutes, until softened.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon dried sage, and 1 teaspoon dried thyme.
- Add the onion mixture from the pan to the herb mixture in the bowl. Stir to combine.
- Pour in 1 1/2 cups of chicken broth and stir in 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) of melted butter.
- Add 4 cups of bread crumbs (day-old bread works best) to the pan. Gently stir until all ingredients are well combined and the bread is moistened.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until heated through and the bread is tender.
- Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra parsley, if desired.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
