  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted margarine
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese blend)

How to Make 1St Place Fair Cheese Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch loaf pan.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon dry mustard, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted margarine, and 1 cup milk.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Add 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese blend). Stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. If desired, sprinkle 1/3 cup chopped onion and 1/4 teaspoon paprika over the top.

  9. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing and slicing to serve.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
