Ingredients for Afghans
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- Corn Flakes
How to Make Afghans
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) softened unsalted butter and ¾ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour and ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in 2 cups crushed cornflakes.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking tray, leaving some space between each biscuit.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Let the biscuits cool completely on the baking tray before icing.
- Once cooled, frost the biscuits with your favorite chocolate icing (recipe suggestions included below).
- Decorate with chopped walnuts and let the icing set before serving.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
