How to Make Almost Boston Baked Beans
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the beans and water (or broth). Soak for at least 6 hours or overnight.
- Drain and rinse the beans.
- Heat the bacon grease or olive oil in the pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Stir in the molasses, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, salt, and pepper.
- Add the drained beans to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 2 hours, or until the beans are tender. Stir occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. The longer they simmer, the better they'll taste!
- Serve warm with crusty bread or alongside your favorite barbecue.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
