How to Make Apple Topped Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch springform pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter and 1 ½ cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
  3. Add 2 large eggs, 1 large egg white, ½ cup plain yogurt, ½ cup applesauce, ¼ cup vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground allspice, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in 2 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples and ½ cup chopped walnuts.
  7. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup packed brown sugar, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon ground allspice.
  8. Pour batter into the prepared springform pan. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the top.
  9. Bake for 47-52 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before running a knife around the edges to loosen.
  11. Remove the sides of the pan and transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Refrigerate leftovers.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
