Ingredients for Baked Mac Cheese W Gouda

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • Chicken Bouillon
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Mustard Powder
  • 6 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded American cheese (or more, to your liking)
  • Gouda Cheese
  • Nonstick Cooking Spray

How to Make Baked Mac Cheese W Gouda

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 1 pound of elbow macaroni and cook until 2 minutes before al dente, according to package directions.
  3. Drain pasta, rinse with cold water, and set aside.
  4. While pasta cooks, melt 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Whisk in 1/4 cup of Washington Golden Seasoning (or salt and pepper to taste).
  6. Whisk in 5 tablespoons of all-purpose flour until a thick paste forms.
  7. Slowly whisk in 6 cups of milk, bringing to a low boil.
  8. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens (2-3 minutes).
  9. Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1 cup of shredded Gouda cheese, and 1/2 cup of shredded American cheese (or more, to your liking).
  10. Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  11. Layer half of the cooked macaroni in the prepared dish.
  12. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the macaroni.
  13. Top with half of the remaining cheese.
  14. Repeat layers with remaining macaroni, sauce, and cheese.
  15. Sprinkle any remaining cheese over the top.
  16. Cover the baking dish and bake for 15-20 minutes.
  17. Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and bubbly. If baking from refrigerated, add more time as needed to ensure it's bubbly and lightly browned.
  18. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
