How to Make Barbecue Beef Strips
- Cut 1.5 lbs of steak (sirloin, flank, or skirt steak work well) into 1/2-inch thick strips.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients: 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
- Add the beef strips to the marinade, stir to coat, cover, and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or preferably overnight.
- Remove beef strips from marinade, reserving the marinade. Drain the beef strips slightly.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and brown for 3-4 minutes per side.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup tomato sauce, and 1 tablespoon cornstarch.
- Pour the reserved marinade and ketchup mixture over the beef strips in the skillet. Stir to combine.
- Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the beef is cooked through.
- Serve immediately on toasted hamburger buns with your favorite toppings or over cooked rice.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
