Ingredients for Beer And Brats

  • Bratwursts
  • 12 oz dark beer (your favorite!)
  • Onion
  • Ginger
  • Water
  • Coriander
  • Cumin
  • Spicy Brown Mustard

How to Make Beer And Brats

  1. Thinly slice the onion and caramelize it in a large pot or Dutch oven with olive oil over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until golden brown and sweet.
  2. Add brown sugar, Dijon mustard, caraway seeds (if using), salt and pepper to the onions, and stir well to combine.
  3. Pour in the dark beer and beef broth, ensuring the onions are partially submerged in the liquid.
  4. Prick each bratwurst sausage several times with a fork. Gently add them to the pot.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until the brats are floating and cooked through. (Adding a few minutes will enhance the beer flavor further).
  6. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  7. Remove the brats from the pot and place them on the preheated grill. Grill for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are nicely browned and heated through.
  8. Serve the Beer Brats immediately with the caramelized onions and your favorite sides, such as our Red Cabbage Sauerkraut (recipe available separately).

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
