How to Make Different Irish Soda Bread
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch round baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and black pepper.
- Add the buttermilk, beer, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined – a few lumps are okay!
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf in the prepared baking pan.
- Cut a deep cross (about 1 inch deep) into the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 60-65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the bread cool slightly in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy warm!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
